  • Traveling Vietnam wall replica planned for reunion
... The moving wall is expected to arrive in the Falls on June 26. Randolph is planning for it to be set up in the area between the Falls City Hall and the International Falls Public Library on June 27. An opening ceremony at the wall is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 28 ... The closing ceremony is planned for 8 p.m. July 1. Gary Tornes has asked to speak at the closing ceremony, Randolph said. Tornes has written a book on his experience during the Vietnam War ...

  • Coming home
... When graduates of Falls High School are invited home this summer for the All Class Reunion's "Homecoming", there will be those unable to return. Among those who won't be attending are Falls graduates who were killed in service to their country while in Vietnam ... they will be with us as a part of the The Moving Wall, the traveling half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. ... there are five names of graduates of the Falls High School Class of 1965 on the wall, and in total, there are 13 names of Koochiching County residents. These members of our community and their efforts to serve our nation should never be forgotten. The Moving Wall is a great way to keep them close in mind and heart as we gather for the reunion ...

Topic: Apprentices of War, Gary Tornes, FHS-1964
Comments: I just finished reading Apprentices of War, Memoir of a Marine Grunt by Gary Tornes, FHS class of 1964. This book is a "must read" prior to attending the ACR next summer. He dedicated the book to the 58,235 names on the Wall that Heals. Viewing the Wall here next summer will mean so much more to me after reading what these brave men endured. The book is available at many quality bookstores and by ordering online at www.aowllc.com I highly suggest you run right out and buy a copy, and settle into your easy chair with a blanket like I did. Check out the website www.aowllc.com I was disapointed when I finished because I just wanted to keep reading about Gary's interesting life. I loved his references to Rainy Lake, Hollar School and even drinking beer beside Rainy River with my brother-in-law Tom Edens.

Topic: Vietnam Memorial Wall at the ACR
Comments: Unfortunately, many Americans are financially, physically or emotionally unable to make the trek to Washington, D.C. to pay tribute and honor to all who served in the Vietnam War, including the 58,249 who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. What better gift to share with your friends and neighbors than one that honors all who served and continue to serve the cause of freedom? The Wall will be here June 28, 29, 30 and July 1, 2007 for the All Class Reunion. ... (more) ...

    Topic: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall
Comments: I'm just thrilled to have the Wall coming to International Falls for the ACR. My husband is a Vietnam Veteran. He was a Marine serving on the front lines. He was the radio operator and was told before he left for Nam that he only had a 10% chance of coming back alive. Communication is always the first target. Lucky for me he came back, alive and well. But ... there was a lot of mental healing to endure. Everyone that goes through a war has healing to do. That's why my generation became Hippies. We believe in Peace not war, because far to many of us died. I'm thilled we get a chance to honor all veterans.
